The Buddha taught that all pervasive unsatisfactoriness is inherent in life, which he called dukka, the first noble truth. There is a cause of dukka, which is the second noble truth. The third noble truth speaks of freedom from  dukka, and the fourth that there is a path we can walk which leads to the alleviation and cessation of dukka. Through meditation, reading and reflection on a text, class presentations and discussion, this topic of the Buddha's first sermon is explored.

General Description of Classes

Introduction to Vipassana Meditation or Insight Meditation
Vipassana means insight. By observing the breath, and all mind/body processes, one directly perceives the nature of all phenomena. Includes basic instruction in sitting and walking meditation, the five hindrances or obstructions of mind and their antidotes including loving-kindness (metta) meditation.

Deepening Your Practice, Sweeping Meditation
Place the attention throughout the body in a highly detailed and focused manner.

Three Marks of Conditioned Existence
There are three characteristics within the conditions of space time and matter as we experience them in our day to day lives. Through meditation and study, by directly experiencing the three marks of dukka (unsatisfactoriness), anicca (impermanence) and anatta (no solid independent self) we open the door to deeper levels of insight and freedom.

Four Foundations of Mindfulness

Four Noble Truths
The Buddha taught that all pervasive unsatisfactoriness is inherent in life, which he called dukka, the first noble truth. There is a cause of dukka, which is the second noble truth. The third noble truth speaks of freedom from  dukka, and the fourth that there is a path we can walk which leads to the alleviation and cessation of dukka. Through meditation, reading and reflection on a text, class presentations and discussion, this topic of the Buddha's first sermon is explored.

Four Divine Abidings
Love, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity are explored through readings, exercises and meditation.

Five Spiritual Faculties
As in-depth examination of the five spiritual faculties (indriyas): faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom is undertaken. An understanding of the integral inter-relationship between the five is covered in the class as well.

Seven Factors of Enlightenment
The factors present in any moment of awakened consciousness are explored: mindfulness, investigation of dhammas (mind moments), energy, rapture, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity.

The Ten Perfections (Paramis)
